President’s Message

I am writing to update all on the progress of PCR so far this year.

I can’t believe the year is half way over! We had an awesome conference in Monterey this year with some really outstanding speakers. Daphne, our Education Coordinator never ceases to amaze us. We had 159 in attendance. Again breaking last year’s record. PCR continues to grow, now with 458 members.

We had a wonderful turn out at the PCR social in Nashville with 60 in attendance from our region. Thank you to all who came to network and share their successes. We had 9 new attendees to the social 2 of who are newly certified. Congratulations and welcome to PCR

Daphne Weiland is hard at work and plans for 2015 PCR conference are underway. Our destination this year is the fabulous Disneyland Resort Hotel in Anaheim California. The conference is scheduled for February 12-15th. Come early and stay late, enjoy some time at the park. Special discounts will be offered to PCR members. Our exciting speaker lineup is on its way, be sure to come back and visit for upcoming details.

Of special mention it is with a heavy heart and sadness that that I announce we lost one of our members, Donna Lockhardt this year. Thank you to Shelly Burdette-Taylor had a memorial service for her where our members shared her memories. She will be missed.

I strongly encourage members to run for office. We have a great board and being involved brings WOC nursing leadership to a whole new level! Congratulations to all the Nominees that came forward at our Annual PCR conference.

Susan Krause for her participation as our Public Policy Liaison- Susan has moved to Texas to be closer to her family and she will be missed!
We are currently recruiting to back fill her position

Candace Miller for her participation as our Scholarship Chairperson.

News from the National office: Donna Rositani and I had the opportunity to attend the National WOCN leadership workshop in Nashville this year. There was discussion regarding standardization of Regional By-laws with the National By-laws. The BOD will be reviewing the National By-laws and making suggestions to the National office. We will be bringing proposed changes to the General Membership meeting this February for vote. Please be sure to attend.

Finances: We continue to maintain PCR on solid financial ground.

Youth Rally: dates for 2013 will be July 7-12th at San Diego State University. Please visit for additional information.

Scholarships: Our VP Donna Rositani and our Scholarship Chair, Candace Miller were hard at work and finished the criteria our new scholarship that offered a total of $3,000.00 this year to nurses who are in the process of completing their certification in any of the 3 scopes of WOC nursing.

  • David Buffum, Wound & Ostomy, $1,000
  • Zhanna Naroditskaya, Wound, $500.

Please encourage any WOCN nursing students you know that reside in our region, or have completed their certification in the last six months to apply. Applications are open again for this coming year 2015. Information is posted on our website with criteria. The Scholarship committee met in April and after thoughtful consideration of the applicants, winner for the Gene Galindo fund was selected:

Congratulations to:

  • Melissa Cooper was awarded the Galindo Memorial Award for her proposal to use the award funds to purchase ostomy supplies for Mission Hospice & Home Health charity patients using one ostomy product line and to personally fit and educate each patient.
  • We look forward to hearing her presentation at PCR in 2015

WOCN National Conference: I am excited to announce the PCR affiliate was represented this year with a booth and we had a drawing for two WOCN members to win registration to our Annual PCR conference for 2015.

I want to extend a special Thank you to all 26 of PCR members who graciously volunteered their time to represent us in the booth during the exhibit hours, and for pulling together the decor for our booth!

We will be recruiting volunteers for our San Antonio Booth for next year. Just ask this year’s volunteers, they had a blast! If you are interested in volunteering for next year please contact Linda Schultz at Volunteer, its fun!

Thank you to all of our PCR members, and board members for all your support this last year and a half. I have truly enjoyed serving as president.
