President’s Message

This year, 2013, has started off with a bang! I am so pleased to be serving as President for the PCR. I am looking forward to my 2 year term and encourage all to serve on the board. It has not only been eye-opening but a pleasure to be involved regionally. We had an awesome conference in Pasadena this year, with record breaking attendance of 143 members at the conference and over 48 vendors. Daphne did a wonderful job of coordinating the conference and the entire board has been so supportive of me in my new role. As I write this, plans are solidly underway for our 15th annual conference in beautiful Monterey, CA. Feb 20-22, 2014. We will be offering a special certification review course following the regular conference. On Feb 23 Speakers will include Mikel Gray, Paula Erwin-TothÊand Dorothy Doughty! Please check out our website – pcr.org – to read more about the conference and plan on joining us there!

The following are open board positions for the 2013 election:

Vice President, Treasurer, Membership Chair, and Public Relations

I strongly encourage members to run for office. We have a great board and being involved brings WOC nursing leadership to a whole new level!

Process documents AKA job-descriptions are posted on the PCR website.

Congratulations and thanks to:

Susan Krause for her participation as our Public Policy Liaison
Shelly Burdette-Taylor for her participation as our historian.

WOCNews: Our former Societies’ WOCNews has changed names to “in it for YOU”.

It will be published twice a year, and you may have already received the first issue. In-between issues, please check your email for the electronic version of the monthly newsletter WOCNowthat is sent out by our national society.

The PCR website also has a monthly newsletter posted. Please be sure to visit our local website for our regional updates, which include election results, conference information, scholarship information, etc. If you know any members who have received awards or you have any information to add to the monthly newsletter on our website, please email our communications coordinator Jennifer Reynolds at pcrwocn@gmail.com.

Finances: We continue to maintain PCR on solid financial ground. At our last general membership meeting, it was motioned and approved to donate $10,000.00 to the Linda Aukett fund for the youth rally. Funds have been submitted and an email sent to the other WOCN regions encouraging their donations to support this fund.

Youth Rally dates for 2013 will be July 15th – 20th at the University of Washington in Seattle. Please visit www.rally4youth.org/rally.php for additional information.

The application deadline for youth rally counselor sponsorship was May 15, 2013, we did not receive any applications this year.

Scholarships: Our VP Donna Rositani and our Scholarship Chair, Candace Miller have been hard at work defining the criteria for a new scholarship that we will be offering to 2 nurses who are in the process of completing their certification in any of the 3 scopes of WOC nursing. Please encourage any WOCN nursing students you know that resides in our region, or have completed their certification in the last six months to apply. Applications will be open soon. More information will be posted on our website once the criteria are finalized.

The Scholarship committee met and after thoughtful consideration of the applicants, winners for the Gene Galindo fund were selected:

Congratulations to:

Cynthia Shepard, Monkton, MD for her proposal to launch Pocket WOC, an online social network for education and support of ostomates. The objective of the Pocket WOC is to reinforce gaps in knowledge and to provide a robust online community to support and encourage the new ostomate. Smartphone applications for prevention & wellness form an emerging trend: Evidence-based, unbiased by industry and created by a healthcare professional, the Pocket WOC meets all criteria for meaningful effectiveness in mobile apps.

Janet Stoia Davis, Riverside, CA for her proposal to offer an ostomy clinic to individuals living in the community who are living with an ostomy and do not have access to a WOC nurse. Her plan is to use an executive conference room for mini education sessions, plus vendors for products, and a connected room for clinical exams by the WOC for little or no cost to theostomate.

WOCN National Conference: National conference is just around the corner. I am excited to announce we will be representing the PCR affiliate with a booth in the exhibit hall this year! Be sure to stop by our booth and enter for a chance to win registration to our local conference in Monterey for 2014. Special thanks go out to all who graciously volunteered their time to represent us in the booth during the exhibit hours, and for pulling together the décor for our booth. Please take a moment to stop by and see how amazing PCR is.

Mark your calendars: We will be hosting the PCR’s affiliate meeting/reception at the national conference on Monday, June 24, 2013. 5:45-7:30 pm Check the conference website forlocation. Come out and meet your colleagues for some conversation and fun!

Thank you to all of you members (all 456 of us), and board members for all your support during my transition. A special thanks to our past president Cheryl Bartholomew, who has been an angel to me during this transition time. Who would have thought there was so much to learn! Together we make a difference and I am proud to be part of such a great region.

Looking forward to a wonderful term, and a wonderful rest of the year. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Best to all of you, and see you soon in Seattle.

At your service,

Lisa Foster
